Business profile:

Established in 1989 the business is involved in horticultural services for a wide range of Public Utilities Companies, Local Authorities and Motorways on a national basis. The core business is grass care and weed control using environmentally friendly herbicides.
All work is acquired by tendering for contracts, a large percentage of these have been held by the company for a number of years. Turnover for 2004 is in the region of £360,000, with excellent profit margins.

What it does

Using a tight knit team of staff and specialist equipment the business services renewable contracts involved in spraying specific geographical locations identified by the client and treated approximately three times between February and November with non toxic chemicals.

Location

Currently based in the West Midlands the business is relocatable and could be operated from anywhere in the UK.

Clients

The impressive client base is predominantly Blue Chip Companies, Local Authorities, Borough and County Councils.

Key opportunities

This business is ideally positioned to grow. A considerable portfolio of business interests has meant that the present directors have been unable to maximise the potential of the company and have deliberately managed it to a specific size.

Quality Assurance

All staff are fully trained to achieve NPCT 1 and 2 (National Proficiency Test Council) before being allowed to operate the machinery and equipment needed to carry out the contracts.

Technology

The company has specific software that facilitates accurate and competitive tendering. In addition a database of all potential and existing customers is available to the purchaser.

Equipment:

The business owns and maintains a small fleet of specially adapted quad bikes which carry tanks and spraying equipment designed for the job. In addition six HGV’s are used to transport operations teams, machinery, spray equipment and liquid herbicides from contract to contract. The slower winter months are used to service and maintain these to a high standard.

Competition:

There are a number of National Operators who tender for the same business as well as regional companies. However most are unable to give the coverage required or the quality of customer service and consistency of performance.
Advertising and marketing

Because of the strategic decision to control the growth of the business sales and marketing have not been a priority and represent a major opportunity to expand the operation at a controlled and profitable rate.

Reason for sale

The managing director has decided to retire and concentrate on other businesses in his portfolio. Both directors will be available to provide a full and seamless handover with the appropriate training and introduction to key clients.
