How are the courses structured?

All 35 courses are self-contained and follow a similar style and structure and you can adapt them to suite you own needs by adding your own logo etc. Whilst the courses are designed to be delivered over one day, they can easily be expanded to two days or reduced to a half day.

Each course contains 4 files:

Exercises – these are central to each topic and ‘drive’ the course throughout the day.

Tutor Guide - an aid to the trainer, in terms of the exercises and slides, at any particular point during the day.

Slides - these can be printed out onto acetates or given as a presentation using PowerPoint.

Notes - in addition to copies of the slides, notes are provided for background to the topic

As the style is the same throughout and there are no page numbers, the interchangeability of materials between courses is easy. You simply insert materials from any part of one course into another one giving you countless variations to meet your own needs.

What are the national awards?

The Institute of Leadership & Management (ILM) is part of City & Guilds and is the largest awarding body of accredited, vocational management training in the UK. The courses contained in the Start Training Package have been ‘mapped’ to ILM awards and are suitable for inclusion in a wide range of accredited ILM certificates and diplomas. In conjunction with an ILM Accredited Centre you will be able to offer a range of ILM awards using the materials from the Package.

Can you help me get business at the start?

Yes, to assist you from the start you will have access to the services of an experienced and highly qualified business coach. There is also a range of promotional materials in the Package and you will be invited to join the network of Associates (other people who have bought the Package). Small training firms often have too much work at one time and need to sub-contract some of it to people like you. We find that our associate win contracts that are often too big to carry out themselves. They approach the network of Associates and make contact with those who might work for them on a sub-contract basis. This is obviously a benefit to both parties and enables our Associates to work collaboratively.

How much selling will I have to do?

Selling is a very small part of the work in our business. We have a small number of large clients with whom we have a long-term relationship. We have been delivering training to many of them since the mid-nineties! In this business, once you have worked with them, you are very often retained over many years. You will find that only a few clients are needed to sustain this business. We’re not suggesting complacency, merely the fact that providing existing clients with additional training, other related products and a quality service is easier and more profitable that constantly trying to gain new customers.

Will I be credible if I do both the selling and the training?

There is no credibility issue with the trainer and salesperson being one and the same. In fact, it is a clear benefit. Clients are sophisticated and very often want the salesperson to be the one who actually carries out the training. They want to see what they are going to get and are unimpressed, even suspicious, with an overly slick selling approach!

Do I need to be an experienced salesperson?

No, this is not a high pressure selling business. Knowing your materials and how they can be adapted to the needs of the client will always be more influential than selling techniques. The people you will deal with in firms know the market and will be familiar with your competitors and their prices. They will be far more interested in your training materials, the learning process and any subsequent development or follow-up. 2 The Abridged Package
